Researchers at the New York Aquarium in New York City have set up a two-way mirror to deepen their understanding of beluga whales.
They've observed ‘Natasha’ and her daughter ‘Maris’ displaying previously unobserved behaviours that appear to show self-awareness, such as studying their marshmallow-like faces and inspecting their teeth.
Scientists say the ability to recognize one’s self is a unique trait in nature, typically found in species that are intelligent, social and empathetic, such as humans.
