9-year-old boy recounts San Diego mosque attack

Nine-year-old Odai Shanah, whose mother emigrated from war-torn Gaza and settled around San Diego two decades ago, was among dozens of children forced to huddle in classrooms on Monday when deadly gunfire erupted at the Islamic Center where they attend school. Shanah recalled hearing a barrage of 12 to 16 gunshots coming from outside the walls of the complex. The gun violence that rocked the Islamic Center and the close-knit surrounding community of Muslim residents surely came as a particular shock to Shanah’s mother, who fled Gaza for the United States in 2006. His father emigrated from Jordan to the US in 2015. Both parents gave permission for their son to be interviewed and named for this video, so he could recount this traumatic experience in his own words.
