The recent 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election became one of the most discussed political events in India. The BJP won West Bengal for the first time, defeating Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress after more than a decade in power.
Voter turnout was extremely high, crossing 92%, making it one of the highest participation elections in the state’s history.
A lot of people are also discussing NOTA (“None of the Above”) votes. In many constituencies, thousands of voters pressed the NOTA button to show dissatisfaction with all candidates. For example, in the Beleghata constituency, NOTA received 1,568 votes. Total NOTA votes in state touched almost 500,000.
Overall, NOTA numbers in West Bengal remained much smaller than the votes received by major parties like BJP and TMC, but political analysts say NOTA still reflects public frustration and protest voting in some areas. The election also saw debates about voter lists, violence, and allegations from rival parties, making it one of the most controversial Bengal elections in recent years.
