Residents of Almonte gathered outside the town's Old Town Hall on Sunday for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240's annual ceremony marking the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War, which ran from 1939 to 1945 and claimed more than 4,000 Canadian lives. CTV's Kimberley Johnson reports that John Chance, a 102-year-old veteran who served in the campaign and is among the last surviving veterans in Canada, was honoured at the event alongside tributes to the more than 2,000 Royal Canadian Navy personnel killed during the battle. Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry spoke at the ceremony, noting that the Battle of the Atlantic has ties to many families in the community. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 president John Dalgity helped lead the service, which included the ringing of a bell to mark each ship lost during the campaign.
