As the Citroën DS starts up, its inner headlight pods sweep side to side while the directional lighting system calibrates itself. Unlike modern electronic adaptive headlights, this setup used cables and linkages directly connected to the steering.
When the driver turned the wheel, the high beams physically pivoted with the front wheels to illuminate curves and dark roads ahead. At the time, it was one of the most advanced automotive safety innovations ever put into a production car.
Citroën introduced the system in 1967, decades before adaptive lighting became common. Even today, the smooth mechanical movement still feels futuristic.
