The "high-voltage drama" currently unfolding along the maritime routes of the Middle East has left the entire world holding its breath. News of an attack on an Indian vessel just hours ago had barely subsided when yet another major incident erupted at sea. Reports indicate that a ship has been hijacked off the coast of Fujairah in the UAE and is currently being steered toward the Iranian border. This act of piracy has made it abundantly clear that the Strait of Hormuz has now effectively transformed into an arena where international laws no longer hold sway, and only the language of brute force prevails. Iran currently appears to be adopting an extremely aggressive posture at sea. Just last week, it seized a tanker named the *Ocean Koey*. Iran’s contention was that any vessel operating in furtherance of U.S. interests—or in violation of its regulations—would not be spared. Asghar Jahangir, the spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary, went so far as to assert that this was not an act of illegal extortion, but rather a lawful enforcement action executed pursuant to a court order. However, the pertinent question remains: can the rulings of a domestic court in any nation legitimately be enforced within international maritime waters?
