Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada's new Ministerial Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion which will be chaired by Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Mark Miller.
"The council has a clear mission to combat racism and hate in all their forms, and to guide the Government of Canada as part of our efforts to build a fairer, more just, more inclusive society," Carney said.
The prime minister also designated the first responsibility of this new council is to address antisemitism in multiple capacities including assessing the nature, scale and drivers of antisemitism in Canada, coordinating a "whole-of-government" approach to combating antisemitism, research into the collection of data on hate incidents, and measuring the impact of their efforts.
His remarks, in Toronto, come less than a month after police in that city responded to a call about three "visibly" Jewish community members being shot at with an imitation firearm. Jewish advocacy group B'nai Brith says anti-Jewish hatred is being normalized in Canada and that antisemitic incidents topped 6,800 in 2025 — the highest number it's recorded since 1982.
