Bun Bang Fai is a traditional rocket festival held in parts of Thailand before the rainy season begins. Teams build massive homemade rockets from bamboo and metal, then launch them skyward as part of a long standing cultural celebration.
This wheel shaped Talai rocket spins rapidly while climbing, producing the loud pulsing sound heard during flight. The rotation helps stabilize the rocket as it burns through solid fuel and leaves behind a twisting column of dense white smoke.
Some festival rockets can travel thousands of feet into the air depending on their size and construction. Despite the celebration atmosphere, these launches are carefully managed because of the extreme power and unpredictable behavior of the rockets.
