Saudi Arabia has officially called for the sighting of the crescent moon for Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH, marking the beginning of the Hajj 2026 season. According to astronomical experts and moon-sighting organizations, the chances of sighting the new crescent on May 17, 2026 are considered moderate to high in some regions of Saudi Arabia and nearby areas, depending on weather and visibility conditions.
Experts from international astronomy centers state that the moon may be visible after sunset in western parts of the region, while some calculations suggest it could also require completion of 30 days of the current Islamic month if not sighted.
If the crescent is confirmed tonight, then:
1 Dhul-Hijjah will begin on May 18, 2026
Eid al-Adha is expected on May 27, 2026
If the moon is not sighted:
The current month will complete 30 days
Dhul-Hijjah will start on May 19, 2026
Eid al-Adha will shift by one day
This announcement is part of the traditional Islamic moon-sighting process used in Saudi Arabia, combining both official testimony and astronomical calculations.
