Mating damselflies on algae in Jabarkhet Mussoorie

A moment in the life cycle of two Damselfly in Jabarkhet. The pair is observed in the characteristic "tandem" position, where the male grips the female behind her head using specialized claspers at the end of his abdomen. While remaining connected, the female carefully dips the tip of her abdomen into a vibrant mat of green algae, depositing eggs in a process known as oviposition. This behavior ensures that the developing larvae hatch directly into a suitable aquatic environment. Damselflies are closely associated with freshwater habitats, where their aquatic young, known as nymphs, spend months or even years before emerging as adults.
