Not all desires are equal. Epicurus divided them into three types.
Some are necessary: food, shelter, friendship. They are easy to satisfy and enough when it’s enough. Others are just comfort: nice, but not needed. And then there are vain desires: status, wealth, prestige. And these can never be satisfied.
So when we buy to keep up and impress, we feed a desire that never ends.
