Premiered in Moscow in 1877, this timeless ballet weaves a tragic love story between Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess condemned by a sorcerer's spell to spend her days as a swan, reclaiming her human form only by night, and only if a vow of true love can break the enchantment. Fairy-tale wonder and Romantic heartache collide in a score rich with recurring leitmotifs for the swans, the moonlit lake, the sinister Rothbart, that forever changed what music could do for dance. The Swan Lake Suite, Op. 20 distills that emotional journey into six unforgettable movements. It opens with a hushed Scene that breathes the stillness of a lakeside night, before the sweeping Valse conjures the glitter of the royal court and the excitement of a first encounter. Then comes the suite's luminous centrepiece: the Danse des Cygnes, whose interlaced, flowing melodies paint the swan-princess and her companions in motion that feels at once hypnotic and heartbreaking. Two atmospheric Scenes draw the listener back to the lake's brooding mystery, tenderness and shadow trading places with each other, until the suite ignites with the Danse hongroise "Czardas", a burst of folk fire and colour that echoes the wild spirit of Hungarian gypsy music. Six movements. Every contrast the full ballet holds, grace and drama, light and darkness, compressed into one vivid, electrifying portrait of a masterpiece.
