The Roma: Life in a Parallel Society | ENDEVR Documentary
How the Rich Took Hawaii: https://youtu.be/tuGCfDyLCUQ
The Roma are one of the most closed communities in France and also one of the most discriminated against. Despite making up barely 0.02% of the population, their encampments and way of life often provoke tensions and problems with neighbours. Five years ago, 800 Roma illegally settled in Prairie-de-Mauves on the outskirts of Nantes. We take a look at this veritable town-within-a-town, with its church, garage, bar and more than 100 caravans.
Camp life is basic and hazardous, with unstable power and overcrowded shacks. Residents primarily work as low-paid fruit pickers, though some turn to crime, fueling local hostility. In Moissac, Roma workers make up 12% of the population and are vital to the "Fruit Capital's" economy, yet tensions are high due to increased police surveillance and council-led monitoring.
Many Roma spend summers in Romania or Bulgaria, where they own large, traditional family homes. They return to France each September because agricultural wages are four times higher than those back home.
