While working as a tour guide in the Australian outback, he would always stop to check the pouches of kangaroos killed by cars on the roadside. Often, the joeys were still alive inside.
He came up with a plan: nurse them back to health and release them back into the wild. But some were too injured to outrun dingoes or bush fires. So Brolga gave up his job and built a sanctuary in Alice Springs, spending every last penny on a giant dingo-proof fence, and ending up living in a tin shack on site with no electricity, no toilet, and a bed full of joeys.
Then came Kangaroo Dundee, a BBC documentary series that changed everything. The show turned Brolga into an unlikely TV star, securing the sanctuary's future, letting Brolga dedicate himself fully to his joeys.
Today, The Kangaroo Sanctuary rescues and releases around 100 orphaned kangaroos a year. Each one paired with a best buddy, given plenty of love, and slowly guided back to the wild.
And some of Brolga's joeys have since starred in a family film called Kangaroo, inspired by his remarkable life.
