Older diesel trucks like the Mercedes Benz LAF 3500 relied on fully mechanical starting systems designed for cold weather reliability. Instead of automatic glow plug timers, the driver manually controlled each stage of the startup process using the large dashboard pull switch nicknamed the Gorilla Knob.
Pulling the knob halfway activated the glow plugs to preheat the combustion chambers. Drivers then watched the small dashboard indicator, often called the “salt shaker,” which contained a visible heating filament that glowed bright red once the engine reached starting temperature.
After the indicator lit up, pulling the knob fully outward engaged the electric starter motor and cranked the diesel engine to life. Systems like this became iconic on vintage European trucks because the entire startup sequence was mechanical, visual, and completely controlled by the driver.
