The recent decision by Meta Platforms to remove end-to-end encryption (E2EE) from Instagram direct messages has triggered a major backlash across social media, cybersecurity communities, and privacy advocacy groups. The company confirmed that Instagram’s optional encrypted chat feature would be discontinued, meaning ordinary Instagram DMs are no longer protected in a way that prevents Meta itself from accessing message content. This has reignited long-running debates about digital privacy, surveillance, moderation, and the growing role of AI in social platforms, specially inside India.
Meta explained that only a relatively small percentage of Instagram users enabled encrypted chats, and the company argued that maintaining E2EE made it significantly harder to detect negative things. According to Meta, removing encryption will improve its ability to moderate activity. The company has instead encouraged users who want encrypted communication to move to WhatsApp, which still retains strong default end-to-end encryption for personal chats.
Despite those explanations, criticism has been intense. Privacy advocates argue that removing encryption means Meta can once again technically access the contents of users’ private conversations. This creates new concerns about how personal communication data could be handled in the future.
