Japan experiences around 1,500 earthquakes every year, but experts warn that a major quake along the Nankai Trough could trigger massive tsunamis, widespread destruction, and potentially hundreds of thousands of deaths.
In this episode of Asia Specific, host Mariko Oi speaks with former BBC Japan correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and Asia Specific journalist Derek Cai to explain what a megaquake is, why the Nankai Trough is so dangerous, and how prepared Japan really is.
We also reflect on lessons from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and whether such disasters can ever be predicted.
This episode was recorded on 22 April 2026.
