🥊 FIGHT DESCRIPTION:
Undefeated welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. successfully defended his IBF crown with a dominant stoppage victory over former world champion Lamont Peterson in the main event of SHOWTIME’s Saturday night card at Barclays Center.
Making the first defense of the title he captured from Kell Brook last May, Spence (23-0, 20 KOs) controlled the fight from the opening bell, outclassing Peterson (35-4-1, 17 KOs) with superior speed, power, and sharp technical boxing. The bout was waved off before the eighth round began after Peterson’s trainer, Barry Hunter, decided to stop the contest.
The matchup unfolded much like both fighters expected, beginning as a cautious tactical battle before evolving into a heated exchange in the middle rounds. Late in the fifth, Spence unleashed a crushing left hook that dropped Peterson to the canvas. Although the Washington, D.C. veteran beat the count and fought on bravely, Spence’s relentless attack proved overwhelming. The 2012 U.S. Olympian dominated statistically, landing Peterson 161-45 overall while connecting on 49% of his power punches compared to Peterson’s 31%.
