Banggai Undiscovered - Floating Village & Mystery Island (Sulawesi, Indonesia)

In this final chapter of my 9-day adventure through the Banggai Islands, I uncover two of Sulawesi’s most hidden gems: a floating village and a mystery island. Leaving Mbuang Mbuang behind, I travel to the remote Bajo village on the Mandebulu reef in Banggai Laut. With just 16 houses floating on the sea, this unique community of fishermen has thrived in isolation for decades. I stay overnight, sharing meals, fishing, and sleeping under the open sky on a bamboo floor. I also meet Pak Endong, a local Banggai hero, from the Bajo tribe, who has called this village home for 25 years and has inspiring stories to tell. Next, I continue to the tiny, mysterious Nal Island (Pulau Katini)—a place no one seemed to know much about. Upon arrival, I discover a 300-meter-long island with 100 people living primitively on the beach. With no signal and a timeless atmosphere, life here feels like stepping back into the past of the Indonesian culture and life. Fishing is the heart of their survival, and the simplicity of their way of life is both humbling and fascinating. A true hidden gem in Indonesia.
