North Korean women's soccer club Naegohyang arrived in South Korea on Sunday (May 17), landing at Incheon International Airport after transiting through Beijing, the first such visit by athletes from the North in eight years.
The trip follows their participation in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the last time North Korean athletes travelled to the South.
At the airport’s arrival hall, South Korean civic groups held a small welcome event, displaying banners to greet the players.
Naegohyang Women's FC is set to face Suwon FC Women in the semi-finals of the Asian Women’s Champions League (AWCL) at 7 p.m. (1000 GMT) on Wednesday (May 20) at Suwon Sports Complex.
An official press conference involving all participating teams is scheduled for Tuesday (May 19), one day ahead of the match.
The North Korean delegation, comprising players and staff, is expected to remain in South Korea for the duration of the tournament, with the final set for Saturday (May 23) in Suwon. If eliminated in the semi-finals, the team is expected to return home the following day, according to South Korean Unification Ministry.
