Born in Bergen to a family of Scottish-Danish merchants, he studied in Leipzig and Copenhagen, honing his craft amid Scandinavian revivalism. Breakthrough acclaim came in 1866 with the effervescent Piano Concerto in A minor, championed by Liszt and Franz, while his incidental music for Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, featuring the buoyant “Morning Mood” and haunting “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, cemented his fame. Grieg crafted songs, chamber works, and orchestral suites like Holberg, all infused with crisp melodies and fjord-like freshness. From 1866 onward he lived in Troldhaugen near Bergen, promoting Norwegian music through his wife Nina’s voice and founding a national string quartet. Honored across Europe, he died of heart failure in 1907, revered as Norway’s musical soul with global appeal.
