Differentiating between structural pain (linked to physical damage) and non-structural pain (neural-circuit pain) is a core element of “unlearning pain”. This can be accomplished by understanding the characteristics of neural pathways. One of these characteristics is triggers: symptoms are brought on by stimuli that would not actually cause the symptom physically, but they activate the brain to generate the symptom.
Non-structural pain can act as a signal that is learned rather than directly caused by physical harm. This type of pain may develop through conditioning, where the brain learns to associate non-threatening stimuli with pain due to past experiences, injuries or emotional responses.
Dr. Howard Schubiner, a leading expert on chronic pain, has conducted extensive research on the treatment of chronic conditions, and has helped thousands to become pain-free or substantially recover from diverse chronic pain conditions.
