Before digital fuel readouts became common, many older cars used vacuum operated economy gauges to give drivers a rough idea of fuel efficiency in real time. The system was connected directly to the engine’s intake manifold vacuum.
When the driver presses the accelerator, engine vacuum drops sharply because the throttle opens wider and the engine demands more fuel. That sudden change pushes the needle toward MIN, signaling lower fuel economy under heavy load.
As the throttle closes and vacuum returns during cruising or idle, the needle swings back toward MAX. Gauges like this became a signature feature of luxury American cars during the late 1970s and 1980s fuel economy era.
