Donald Trump declared Keir Starmer was “in a lot of trouble” - and advised the Prime Minister to get tough on immigration if he wants to remain in Number 10.
The US President also told Sir Keir to ditch his drive for “green” energy and drill for oil in the North Sea instead.
Speaking on board Air Force One as he returned from his state visit to China. Mr Trump described Sir Keir as “a nice man” but repeated criticism of the UK’s failure to offer more support for the US battle against Iran.
Delivering his verdict on Labour’s leadership battles, Mr Trump said: “He’s in a lot of trouble.
“He’s very bad on energy, he should open up the North Sea.”
The President added: “It’s a tough thing. Unless he can straighten out immigration, where he’s weak, and if he doesn’t start drilling and stop with the windmills all over the place.”
Asked if Sir Keir should quit, Mr Trump replied: “I don’t say that. I think he’s a nice man, actually.”
Referring to what he regards as Britain’s failure to send Royal Navy vessels to the Gulf, he said: “I didn’t like when he said we’re going to send ships as soon as you’re finished with the war.”
