Recent reports say Iran’s diplomatic mission in Hyderabad mocked Marco Rubio after his visit to the Taj Mahal during his India trip.
According to multiple outlets, the Iranian Consulate posted remarks suggesting that if Rubio “knew history,” he would understand that the Taj Mahal reflected Persian/Iranian architectural influence and craftsmanship. The comments were widely interpreted as a sarcastic jab amid ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions.
The controversy began after Rubio shared photos from the Taj Mahal and called it “one of the true treasures of the world.” Iran’s response highlighted the monument’s Mughal-era Persian artistic roots and accused the U.S. of hostility toward Iranian civilization.
Rubio was in India for diplomatic meetings covering trade, Indo-Pacific security, and Middle East issues, including Iran-related tensions. He also met with Narendra Modi and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Some coverage also noted that the exchange became part of a broader online geopolitical “snark diplomacy” moment between Iran and the U.S. during heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran policy.
