Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called for the federal Liberal government to abolish what he called the “Netflix tax” in the House of Commons on Thursday.
The opposition leader’s demand comes as Netflix, Disney and Amazon are being asked to increase the portion of revenue they contribute to create Canadian content to 15 per cent – triple the initial rate – putting the costs of major streaming platforms at risk of rising for Canadians.
“We will take no lessons from these Conservatives,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said, defending the Liberal party’s efforts to mitigate the cost-of-living crisis in Canada.
Clarifying that the decision from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is “not a new tax,” David Myles – parliamentary secretary to the Canadian identity and culture minister – said the broadcasting organization “only ensures that existing rules are applied in a way that fosters fair competition.”
Myles continued: “What we are talking about here is imaginary taxes once again… This is about protecting Canada's distinct culture and identity and ensuring the vitality of our cultural sectors.”
