For days, the United States and Iran have seemingly sought to one-up the other while actively engaged in negotiations. Oil prices plunged and markets stabilized Thursday after U.S. officials say a 60-day memorandum of understanding had been reached that could extend the ceasefire and work as an agreement to discuss a long-term solution.
Meanwhile, Iran will also need approval from its senior leadership, which has repeatedly pushed back on any attempts to curb its nuclear ambitions. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz is another critical component in the peace talks.
“It's going to take weeks, if not months before we start to see a harmonized flow, pre-war flow coming in and out of the Hormuz,” USC Marshall Nick Vyas said.
As Reggie Cecchini reports, an overnight exchange of fire between the U.S. and Iran doesn’t appear to have made an impact on negotiations.
