Heavy timber framing like this often uses engineered steel connector plates to strengthen beam joints that would otherwise become weak points under load. Instead of swinging a traditional hammer, the worker is using a pneumatic mini palm nailer to rapidly drive structural nails through the Simpson Strong Tie plate and into the large wooden beams.
A mini palm nailer works differently than a standard nail gun because it delivers repeated pneumatic hammer strikes directly onto the head of a single fastener. Its compact size allows builders to install nails in extremely tight spaces where full size framing nailers or hammers would be difficult to use, especially around structural brackets and connector hardware.
The steel tie plate helps spread force across both beam sections so the joint can better resist shear loads, twisting, and long term movement. Combined with the anchored support post below, the reinforced connection creates a stronger continuous load path that improves durability, stability, and overall structural integrity in outdoor timber construction.
