The film follows Zheng Musheng, who leaves Chaoshan for work in Thailand, and Xie Nanzhi, a woman of Chaoshan descent who keeps sending letters and money to his family in his name for nearly two decades after his death. Made on a budget of just over 14 million yuan and featuring largely unknown actors, this Teochew-dialect indie has become a major success on word of mouth, crossing 1 billion yuan at the box office. In this episode of Global Heartbeat, host Han Yonghong speaks with Associate Professor Ji Yun, Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs at the Buddhist College of Singapore, about the film’s emotional resonance and the lasting legacy of qiaopi among overseas Chinese.
